Marian Adducci and Gigi Reinheimer have opened a children’s independent bookstore in Walnut Creek, California. All ages will enjoy Flashlight Books, as they carry adult books, too.  The bookstore hosts author events, offers a tutoring space, and has activities for pre-teens and teens.

Visit them at 1537 N. Main Street and www.flashlightbooks.com and support independent bookstores, where people know and love books and nurture that passion in their community.

How One Girl Promotes Change Through Writing – You Can Too!

Saturday, December 21st, 2013

Thanks to Rich Freedman of the (Vallejo) Times-Herald, word has spread about a youngster who channeled her anger into writing.

Diagnosed with leukemia this past year, ten-year-old Monica Romo wrote an essay detailing how “Wonder Woman” (Monica!) would rid Vallejo, in Northern California, of hate and evil. In her City Hall appearance, 125 people shared her hope. Receiving a Solano Hero’s Certificate, Monika received a Solano Hero’s Certificate.

Congratulations, Monika!

Writing Prompts:

1. Use your passionate feelings about an issue to inspire art or writing. How will you choose to express yourself? Which cause incites your emotions?

2. Pretend you are a superhero. Write a graphic novel or comic strip expressing your passion for change.

Break out your pens again! We’re having another teen writing group, and we would love for you to join us.

Writing can be a solitary pursuit… but it doesn’t have to be! Want to meet other enthusiastic teen writers? Come to a teen writing group at the Lafayette Library! We’ll chat, share ideas and experiences about our writing, and — of course — write alongside each other with prompts. We aim to create a fun, welcoming teen community of writers that encourages and supports its members.

This is an open and free group (8th-12th grade preferred). Just bring paper, your favorite writing tool, and enthusiasm! :-)
