13th Annual Voices of Lincoln Poetry Contest
Poets Wanted! Enter Now! Special Young Poets Category!
The 13th Annual Voices of Lincoln Poetry Contest officially begins in April, as part of the celebration of National Poetry Month, with five new categories: “Love Is All Around Us,” “Dreams Do Come True,” “On The Street Where I Live,” “Gone But Not Forgotten,” and “A Second Chance.” Poets may submit a maximum of three poems, no more than one in each of three of the five contest categories.
Poems may be in rhyme, free verse, Haiku or other accepted poetry forms and of any length, up to a maximum of 60 lines.
Everyone is encouraged to enter the contest. Poets do not have to live in Lincoln, CA to be eligible. Young Poets, 18-years of age or under, are encouraged to submit poems and will compete in a special “Young Poets” category.
Entry Forms and Contest Rules are available at the Front Desk at the Lincoln Public Library at Twelve Bridges and can be downloaded from the following website: www.libraryatlincoln.org from the banner at the top of the website when the contest announcement appears.
Entry Forms must be received no later than Saturday, July 22, 2017. Early submissions are appreciated. If you have questions, please contact Alan Lowe, Contest Coordinator, at [email protected] for assistance.
Winners will read their poems on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at the Voices of Lincoln event to be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Willow Room at the Lincoln Public Library at Twelve Bridges, 485 Twelve Bridges Drive, Lincoln, CA. Winners also will be presented with a commemorative chapbook of the winning poems.
Hourglass Literary Magazine presents a short story, poetry, and essay competition. Winning Entry in each category will receive US$1000 as prize money.
Deadline: April 30, 2017 ($5000 total cash prizes!)
We only accept submissions online via Submittable.
- Entry fee: $15 USD per submission (except for Best Poem category where up to three submissions are accepted for the same price).
- Entry fee for authors who want to compete with more than one work in the category for the best essay, best short story is 25 USD for three works.
BEST SHORT STORY
Text for a short story should not exceed 7000 words or be less than 700 words.
BEST POEM
There are no strict limits, provided that poems should not have more than 3500 words. Author, writer competing in the category for the best poem can submit up to three works.
BEST ESSAY

Topic: “Do Your Little Bit of Good”
Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu once said, “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”
Everyone, even the young, has the power to change the world around them for the better.
There are many members in our communities, young and old, rich and poor, people of all races and religions, who are finding new ways to resist the negative influences of racism and inequality that are all around us..
What ideas do you have on how can you create peace in your community and in the world? What are the small acts you can do to make the world a better place? Using your unique, artistic voice, create a visual and/or literary interpretation that conveys little bits of good.

Three Categories
1) Essay 2) Creative Writing – poem, story or play or 3) Art – any medium including sculpture, photography and video.
Contest Rules
Open to all Contra Costa County middle and high school students.
VERY IMPORTANT !!!: For all entries: Include a cover sheet with your NAME, HOME ADDRESS, PHONE, EMAIL, SCHOOL, GRADE, TEACHER (or teacher who informed you of the contest), TEACHER’S PHONE and EMAIL, ENTRY CATEGORY and TITLE OF WORK. Please print! Cover sheet available below.
Entries will be judged on: 1) Composition; 2) Originality 3) Depth of thought, and 4) Relationship to topic.
WRITING ENTRIES are to be a maximum of 750 words (middle school) or 1,000 (high school): typed, double-spaced, with numbered pages. Please have a teacher review your writing before submitting. Send the document as a .doc or.docx email attachment to [email protected] with the subject line “Art & Writing Contest 2017”.
ART ENTRIES, mail or arrange for delivery by contacting the Center. Firmly attach the cover sheet on the back of the artwork. Arrangements will be made for art to be returned after the Awards Dinner.
