The National Organization for Women Foundation once again hosts our annual poster contest to celebrate the Love Your Body Campaign.

The winning posters are featured on the website and used to promote Love Your Body events.

Before submitting posters to the contest, please look at past winners and familiarize yourself with the campaign. Winning posters will be chosen based on how well they counteract the media’s use of narrow, unrealistic, negative images of women and/or challenge advertisers that profit from women’s dissatisfaction with their bodies.

Posters should be graphically attractive and use dynamic messaging. We especially look for images that demonstrate beauty is not limited by body size, body type, ethnicity, age or physical appearance. The winning posters will be displayed in schools and other public settings, so please consider this when designing your poster.

IMPORTANT: Each entry must include the artist’s full name, address, phone number, valid e-mail address and category number on the back of each poster. See the prizes section below to determine what category you are in.

Digital Artwork: Digital submissions are accepted in PNG or PDF formats. The poster must include the words 2019 Love Your Body Campaign and the NOW Foundation web site address, www.nowfoundation.org. Digital submission should be sent to [email protected].

Physical Artwork: Poster should be no larger than 9″ x 12″. The poster must include the words 2019 Love Your Body Campaign and the NOW Foundation web site address, www.nowfoundation.org. If you are a category winner, you will be asked for an electronic file of your poster at that time.

Artists may submit multiple posters in the same category, but may not submit posters in different categories. Categories are determined by the age of the designer/artist. If submitting multiple entries, please send them all in one envelope or package.

Entries are accepted from all countries and are open to all gender identities.

Only original artwork will be considered.

Copyrighted Images/Subjects: Original signed release forms are required for copyrighted images or materials. Release forms are also needed for “subjects,” whether public or private citizens. Release forms are not provided by NOW Foundation.

Topic: “Do Your Little Bit of Good”
Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu once said, “Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”

There are many members in our communities, young and old, rich and poor, people of all races and religions, who are finding new ways to resist the negative influences of racism and inequality that are all around us..
What ideas do you have on how can you create peace in your community and in the world?  What are the small acts you can do to make the world a better place?  Using your unique, artistic voice, create a visual and/or literary interpretation that conveys little bits of good.

Topic: “Cherish these natural wonders”

President Theodore Roosevelt said, “Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and your children’s children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance.”

Today, as we face global warming and climate change, these words are more pressing than ever before.

How can our art help us as we raise our voice to stop climate change and the environmental destruction of our planet? Using your unique, artistic voice, create a visual and/or literary interpretation of cherishing and protecting the natural wonders and resources of our planet.

The Atlantic & College Board Writing Prize

 Submission window: Jan. 1–Feb. 28, 2016

The Atlantic & College Board Writing Prize returns for its second year! This time, we’re looking for exceptional high school student essays that insightfully analyze and interpret a meaningful work of art.

Our understanding of the human experience is enhanced by the study of significant historical artifacts. When we interact with art — when we learn about it, think about it, write and talk about it — we participate in a larger, ongoing conversation about culture and society. The 2016 Writing Prize contest invites you to be part of this conversation.

Your essay should share your perspective on the artwork you choose to write about, and it should also include evidence that backs up your conclusions. We’re looking for writing that is both interesting and instructive, and that clearly communicates your experience with the artwork and your views on it.

Essays should be between 1,000 and 1,500 words and can be submitted from Jan. 1 to Feb. 28, 2016. You’ll need to ask a teacher-sponsor to approve and submit your essay; see How to Enter for more on that. We’ll select one student winner who will earn a $5,000 prize and have his or her essay published in the September 2016 issue of The Atlantic.

For the past few weeks, I’ve been immersed in a photo project.  Removing pictures from albums, scanning and numbering them haven’t been creative for me.  I’ve felt dulled, going through the motions but lacking that special zing.

A few days ago I met with my writing group. Surrounded by imagination, I felt that energy returning.  Zing! What a difference it made to my day.

So now, although I’m still getting past family photos in order, I’m reserving some time every day for writing.  Funny how after years of being a writer, I needed this reminder to myself.  Seek that deeper layer and all will be well.

Last week, I met with a friend who has been going through emotional trauma.  While walking on the beach, she took a photo of a fire.

Cross in Fire

“They were burning a cross?” I asked her, puzzled.

“No, Liz.  There WAS no cross,” she said.

Zing.

“You’re surrounded by spiritual love,” I told her

“I know,” she said.

Seek your other layer.  When you find it, honor it every day.

Writing Prompts:

1.  As you rush through your day, through work, commuting, household chores, and activities, schedule minutes to discover the deeper you.  Write stories, poems, create art.

2.  Honor your spirituality.  Give gratitude every day.   Provide a random act of kindness and see how it makes you feel.

3.  Search into your past for memories.  Write about how they’ve influenced you.  Use humor and story to give shape to your life.

4.  Appreciate others’ creative works.  Read, visit a museum, and an art show.  Let these ways broaden your own projects.
