Mount Diablo Peace and Justice Center’s Dennis Thomas 22nd Annual Art and Writing Challenge 2020

Create an essay, poem, story, play or piece of art work (including photography, sculpture, and video) on the theme of Our Connected Planet.  Questions to inspire you:

  • How has your connection to our planet played a significant role in your life?
  • How have you been impacted by threats to our climate/planet? How do you see others being affected? 
  • Do you see climate justice as connected to other forms of social justice? If so, how? 
  • In what ways is our planet impacted or threatened by things like nuclear energy, the military-industrial complex, capitalism, and notions of “progress”? 
  • What would your vision of a just and healthy world look like?

Entries must be submitted by 5 p.m. on April 24, 2020 with the mandatory Entry Cover Sheet form found on their website.

AWARDS DINNER:
The public is invited to attend the ART & WRITING CHALLENGE & YOUTH ACTIVIST GRANT AWARDS DINNER,
Saturday, May 16th – 6 PM at the Mt. Diablo Peace and Justice Center, 1035 Carol Lane, Lafayette.

Tickets to the General Public are available for $10 and will include a family-style dinner.

Hourglass Literary Magazine presents a short story, poetry, and essay competition. Winning Entry in each category will receive US$1000 as prize money.

Deadline:  April 30, 2017   ($5000 total cash prizes!)

We only accept submissions online via Submittable.

  • Entry fee: $15 USD per submission (except for Best Poem category where up to three submissions are accepted for the same price).
  • Entry fee for authors who want to compete with more than one work in the category for the best essay, best short story is 25 USD for three works.

Text for a short story should not exceed 7000 words or be less than 700 words.

There are no strict limits, provided that poems should not have more than 3500 words. Author, writer competing in the category for the best poem can submit up to three works.

$2000 + Publication + Agency Review

The winning story will be awarded $2000 and publication online. Second and third place stories will be awarded publication and $200 and $100 respectively. All winners and honorable mentions will receive agency review by: Amy Williams of The Williams Agency, Victoria Marini from Irene Goodman, and Laura Biagi from Jean V. Naggar Literary Agency, Inc. We want you to succeed, and we want your writing to be read. It’s been our mission to support emerging writers since day one.

GUIDELINES:

  • Winner receives $2000, publication, and agency review
  • Second and third place prizes ($200/$100, publication, and agency review)
  • Stories under 7000 words
  • Simultaneous and multiple submissions allowed
  • Emerging writers only (We are interested in offering a larger platform to new writers. Self-published writers and writers with story collections and novels with a small circulation are welcome to submit.)
  • International submissions allowed
  • $20 entry fee
  • Deadline: January 15, 2017
  • Please no identifying information on your story
  • All stories are considered for publication
